The Lindenwood women's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with the Union College Dutchwomen on Saturday afternoon from Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Mo. The tie moves Lindenwood's record to 2-3-1 on the season.
GAME OVERVIEW
Lindenwood had a strong first period, outshooting the visiting Dutchwomen by a 14-4 margin. Despite that advantage, it was Union who broke through with the first goal of the afternoon. Union took a 1-0 lead late in the opening period, scoring with 1:50 to go before the first intermission.
Lindenwood evened the score early on into the middle period, finding the back of the net at the 4:03 mark of the period.
Meara Ryan notched the first goal of her collegiate career on the play with the assists going to
Lokelani Antonio and
Courtney Ganske.
The tie was short lived, as Union managed to reestablish its one-goal lead just 1:39 later as both teams skated 4-on-4.
Lindenwood continued to dominate the shots category in the second period, accounting for 18 of the 30 total in shots in the period. However, Union protected its one-goal lead through the end of period two.
Sophie Wolf made 14 saves over the first two periods of play, before
Annika Asplundh relieved her in goal to start the third period.
Lindenwood continued to trail Union by the same 2-1 score late into the third period. With 2:33 remaining in regulation, Lindenwood pulled Asplundh in favor of an extra attacker.
The move paid off for the Lions, as just 63 seconds later,
Megan Wagner scored to tie the game at 2-2.
Sierra Burt and
Kirsten Martin assisted on the game tying goal, which would be the final goal in regulation.
The two teams headed to a five-minute overtime period, where the Lions outshot the Duthwomen by a 7-1 margin. However, neither team was able to find the game-winning score, resulting in a 2-2 tie.
For the game, the Lions held a 53-27 edge in shots on goal, winning the shots battle in each period of play.
