The Lions earned a last second 3-2 win in overtime against Robert Morris (Ill.) Friday evening in a Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) tilt at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
Neither team scored through a majority of the first two periods, but Lindenwood finally broke the shutout on an even strength goal from
Brendan Murphy, assisted by
Zach Mitchell and
Kyler Newman at 18:29 in the second. The Eagles struck early in the third on the power play to tie the game 1-1, but the Lions only needed 21 seconds to take the lead again.
Tommy Heinzman and
Matt Runyon set up Mitchell for the score at 3:10. Lindenwood held a 2-1 advantage until the midway point of the period when Robert Morris found the equalizer, and the game remained knotted through the end of regulation. It looked like the overtime period might tick away without a winner until
Vegard Faret split the pipes off a feed from
Braden Shea with just 15 second left.
The Lions outshot the Eagles 45-14 and
Stephen Friedland stopped 12 of the 14 pucks he faced to earn the victory in goal.
With the win, Lindenwood improved to 7-2-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the CSCHL. It was also the sixth straight victory for the Lions. They will try to make it seven in a row in the final game of the series against Robert Morris Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
