The Lions had their nine-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Bronchos from Central Oklahoma 4-2 Friday night at the Arctic Edge in Edmond, Oklahoma.
It was a promising start when
Brendan Murphy gave Lindenwood a 1-0 lead with a power play shot set up by
Tommy Heinzman and
Kyler Newman at 13:34 in the first. The Lions carried that advantage into the second period, but the Bronchos tied the game just short of the four-minute mark. Things remained knotted at one through the next 15 minutes of play, but Lindenwood kept taking penalties and Central Oklahoma finally capitalized with a power play goal with 58 second left in the period.
The Bronchos extended their lead to 3-1 midway through the third on an even strength effort before
Aapo Nurminen netted a man-advantage chance at 12:12, assisted by Heinzman and
Zach Mitchell. With just a one-goal deficit, the Lions were within striking distance, but could not find the equalizer, which forced Head Coach
Rick Zombo to pull his goaltender to go six-on-five. The extra pressure was effective, but Central Oklahoma was able to take possession away and essentially clinch the game with an empty-netter with 58 seconds remaining.
Despite the loss, Lindenwood outshot the Bronchos 49-26, and
Cooper Seedott stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced, but the Lions spent too much effort on the penalty kill, giving up a goal on eight man-advantage chances while scoring twice on four power plays themselves.
The loss drops Lindenwood to 10-3-0 overall. The Lions will attempt a split with Central Oklahoma in the series finale Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Edmond, Oklahoma.
