The Lindenwood football team (6-3, 5-0 GLVC) upset No. 8 UIndy (7-1, 5-1 GLVC) 34-27 on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
Cade Brister set a new school record with 541 passing yards in the game.
GAME OVERVIEW
The Lindenwood defense played a great game against the high-powered offense of the Greyhounds, keeping the game scoreless after the first quarter of play. The Lions fumbled a punt near the midway point of the second quarter, but the defense stood strong to force a field goal for the first points of the game. UIndy scored the first touchdown of the game on the ensuing Lindenwood drive after a pick-six made it a 10-0 lead for the Greyhounds with 7:16 to go in the first half.
Lindenwood settled down on offense and put together an 11-play 75-yard drive that was capped off with a 13-yard pass to
Payton Rose, making it 10-7 with 3:14 to go in the second quarter. The Lions forced UIndy to punt on the next possession, and the offense took advantage with less than two minutes remaining. The Lions marched 84 yards in 11 plays before Brister leaped across the goal line for the three-yard touchdown run as time expired, giving the Lions a 14-10 lead over the No. 8 Greyhounds.
The two teams traded possessions to start the second half, before
Nash Sutherlin went 53 yards for a touchdown on a pass from Brister, extending the Lindenwood lead to 21-10. Near the end of the third quarter the Lions had another shot at points after forcing the Greyhounds to punt for the seventh time in the game. Brister would find
Glen Gibbons in the corner of the end zone six plays later to make it a 28-10 lead for the Lions.
UIndy started the fourth quarter with a 23-yard field goal to bring it back to a two-possession game, but
Brett Garner built the lead back up to 18 with a 27-yard field goal of his own. The Greyhounds scored their first offensive touchdown of the game with 7:52 remaining in the fourth quarter, cutting their deficit to 11 points. Garner again added points, this time hitting a 21-yard field goal to make it a 34-20 lead with 2:18 to go in the game. UIndy added a touchdown with 32 seconds remaining in the game, but the Lions held on for the 34-27 upset win on Hall of Fame weekend.
UIndy lost its first GLVC game since October 12, 2016 and just its fifth setback in GLVC play since the start of the 2012 season. Brister continues his record-setting career, breaking his own record of completions in a game with 38 and throwing for 61 yards more than the previous school record (480), held by Ben Gomez.
Najee Jackson led the Lions in receptions (10) and yards (124), while three players had over 100 yards receiving.
The Lindenwood defense had one of its best games of the year, as six different players recorded at lead 0.5 sacks, while seven different players had at least 0.5 tackles for loss.
Wesley Hines registered three pass breakups, while the Lions had six as a team.
