The Lions defeated No. 17 seed Robert Morris (Ill.) 4-1 Friday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2019 American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division I National Championship Friday night in Frisco, Texas.
Ryan Finnegan gave Lindenwood a lead midway through the opening period when he buried a shot on the power play at 7:18 with help from
Zach Mitchell and
Jake Townsend. Finnegan struck again at 6:33 in the second on an even strength play set up by
Mike Lozano and
Victor Lombardi. The Lions advantage ballooned to three when
Tommy Heinzman and
Aapo Nurminen created for Townsend who found the back of the net with the man-advantage at 1:25 of the third. The Eagles were able to break the shutout with their own power play tally at 8:14, but Lindenwood answered with just over five minutes remaining in regulation on a shot from Heinzman, assisted by Mitchell and
Austin Wilk
The Lions outshot Robert Morris 42 to 25 and
Cooper Seedott stopped all but one of the 25 pucks he faced to earn the victory in goal. Special teams were the key with four of the five goals in the game coming on the power play. Lindenwood was successful on three of four man-advantage chances while only allowing a single goal on four opportunities from the Eagles.
The Lions won't play again until Sunday at 8:30 p.m. as they await the winner of No. 8 seed Liberty versus No. 9 seed Arizona, which will take place Saturday night.
