Lindenwood faced a very scrappy squad from Liberty University Sunday night in the quarterfinals, but held off the No. 8 seeded Flames 4-3 to advance to the semifinals at the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division I National Championship in Frisco, Texas. The Lions did most of their offensive damage, scoring all four of their goals, in a stretch of just 18 minutes spanning the first and second periods.
Liberty took an early lead at 3:19 in the opening frame, but Lindenwood answered at 5:38 off the stick of
Ryan Finnegan with help from
Jordan Klimovsky and
Mike Lozano. The Lions made it 2-1 when freshman
Blair Barrows split the pipes at 8:25 on a play set up by
Victor Lombardi and
Colton Craigo. Lindenwood expanded the advantage to a pair of goals early in the second on a drive from
Zach Mitchell at 2:56, assisted by
Zach Martin and
Tommy Heinzman. Klimovsky and
Austin Wilk set up Finnegan for his second goal of the contest at 7:18 to give the Lions a 4-1 lead and what appeared to be a comfortable margin, but the Flames had other ideas.
Liberty switched goaltenders and the new net-minder inspired the Flames to play better defense. Lindenwood held the Liberty offense in check until a major penalty for a hit from behind gave the Flames five minutes of power play time at 5:55 in the third. Liberty took advantage of it about four minutes later with back-to-back goals at 10:21 and 10:36 to make it 4-3. With most of the lead evaporated, the Lions faced the final surge from the Flames down the stretch, including just over a minute of six-on-five play after they pulled their goalie, but Lindenwood survived to advance.
The Lions outshot Liberty 29-24 and
Cooper Seedott stopped 21 of the 24 pucks he faced to earn the victory in goal.
Lindenwood plays No. 6 seed Minot State in the semifinals. The Beavers are on a roll after upsetting No. 3 Adrian in the quarterfinals. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Monday night in Frisco, Texas.
