The Lindenwood football team (1-2, 1-0 GLVC) won its first game in the GLVC, defeating William Jewell (1-2, 0-1 GLVC) 28-16 on Saturday night at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo. The victory marked the 100th career win for head coach
Jed Stugart.
GAME OVERVIEW
The Lions opened the game with a bang, as
Cade Brister connected with
Erik Henneman on a 69-yard pass to take a 7-0 lead. On the next Lindenwood drive, Brister hit
Tyler Chandler on a 12-yard pass to give the Lions a two-score lead. In the second quarter, Brister led the Lions on a long 15-play, 94-yard drive that took 6:30 of game clock. Brister capped off the drive with a three-yard touchdown run, making it a 21-0 lead for Lindenwood.
Lindenwood continued to click on offense, as Brister found Henneman for the second time in the game to make it 28-0 near the end of the half.
Drew Seers led the Lindenwood defense with 12 tackles, helping keep the Cardinals off the board for the majority of the 30 minutes of play. William Jewell kicked a field goal at the end of the half to make it a 28-3 Lindenwood lead heading into the break.
The Lions struggled on offense in the second half, while the Cardinals grabbed momentum to score in the third quarter. A quick score in the fourth quarter by William Jewell made it a 28-16 ball game, and put pressure on the Lions. The Lindenwood defense stood strong and used the help of five sacks to keep the Cardinals off the board for the remainder of the game.
Lindenwood leaned heavily on the running game, as
Dalton Grohler carried the rock 21 times for 97 yards.
Andrew Martin picked on 36 yards on five carries, while the Lions tallied 168 yards on the ground. Brister connected with nine receivers, including seven who had two or more receptions. The Lindenwood defensive line put the pressure on all night, as six players registered a stat in the sack column. Seers made a key stop on fourth down, making a five-yard tackle for loss with 4:45 to go in the game.
