Women's Soccer Blanks Missouri Western for Season-Opening Win

The Lindenwood women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over Missouri Western in its first match of the 2019 season on Friday evening from St. Joseph, Mo. The Lions netted both of their goals during the first half, and held off the Griffons to earn the win.

MATCH OVERVIEW
Lindenwood broke through with the first goal of the match in the 29th minute, as Amanda Orlando deposited a free kick from 21 yards out on the left side of the field into the lower left corner of the goal. Orlando's goal came in her first match as a Lion, and gave Lindenwood an early 1-0 lead.

As the match moved towards halftime, the Lions struck again, this time in the 41st minute. Jill Wipke fed Sammi Gregory off of a free kick from near midfield, which Gregory received and headed into the left side of the net. For Wipke, the assist marked her first point as a Lion.

Lindenwood carried its two-goal lead into halftime.

The Lions remained in control of the match throughout the second half, totaling four shots on goal in the final period and limiting the Griffons to just one.

Lindenwood allowed just two shots on goal for the match, and secured the 2-0 road victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Amanda Orlando tallied her first game-winning goal as a Lion in her Lindenwood debut.
- Orlando finished the match with three shots, all of which were directed on goal.
- Gregory made her only shot on goal of the match count, picking up the fourth goal of her Lindenwood career.
- Mia Corrigan led the Lions in shots and shots on goal, recording four of each in the match.
- Megan Swanson earned the fifth shutout of her Lindenwood career, stopping two shots in the match.
- As a team, Lindenwood outshot Missouri Western by a total of 17-14 for the match. The Lions held a 14-2 edge in shots on goal.
