Women's Basketball Falls to Maryville, 79-67

The Lindenwood women's basketball team (0-2, 0-2 GLVC) lost, 79-67, to the Maryville Saints (2-0, 2-0 GLVC) on the road Thursday.

For the second-straight game, Julia Ruzevich notched a double-double, as she accumulated a career-high 29 points and 15 rebounds. J. Ruzevich has now led the team in both rebounding and scoring in the first two contests of the season.

Hennessey Handy was second on the team with 11 points, as she has reached double-figures in both games this season. Handy also led the team in assists, with four, and in steals, with two. Ellen McCorkle finished the game with a career-high tying two blocks against the Saints.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The contest was back-and-forth for the first three quarters. The Lions jumped out to a 9-8 lead on a Handy three-pointer, with 6:12 left in the opening quarter.
  • The Saints would hold onto the lead for a majority of the period, however Jamie Bain tied the game up at 19-19 with a last-second layup off of a Maryville turnover.
  • The Lions hit on 4-9 three point shot attempts in the first 10 minutes of the game, as Handy went 2-4 from deep.
  • After trailing by as much as eight points in the third quarter, Lindenwood battled back to bring the game within one point heading into the fourth. J. Ruzevich led all players in the game with 14 third quarter points.
  • In the fourth quarter, Emily Benzschawel hit a turnaround jump shot with 7:50 left in the game to tie it up at 61-61. Both teams would go scoreless, however, for the next three minutes.
  • After narrowing the margin to as much as one point, the Lions were unable to retake the lead, falling by 12 points to the Saints.
  • As a team, Lindenwood shot 38.3 percent from the field, and 31.3 percent from deep in the matchup.
BOX SCORE LEADERS
  • J. Ruzevich was the team's leader in points with 29 points. Handy also added 11 points for the Lions.
  • J. Ruzevich set a new career-high with 15 rebounds in the game, finishing with the most boards of any player for either team.
  • Handy's four assists led the team. J. Ruzevich (3), McCorkle (2), and Grace Neff (2) all finished with multi-assist games.
  • Handy was tops on the team with her two steals. McCorkle blocked two Maryville shots, which also was a team-high.

Lindenwood stay on the road to face Quincy on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 1:00 p.m. Following Saturday's game, the Lions return home to take on Missouri S&T on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 6:00 p.m.
