Men's ice hockey came back from one goal deficits twice to force overtime, then took the shootout to earn a 3-2 win against Iowa State Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
After a scoreless first period, the Cyclones took the lead at 3:35 of the second, but the Lions knotted the game at one when
Austin Wilk and
Andy Willis set up
Alex Kalau for a power play shot at 11:10. Iowa State made it 2-1 with the man-advantage with 4:14 remaining in the period, and it looked like that might be enough for a Cyclones victory until
Colton Craigo rocked the cage off a pass from Willis with 4:25 left in the game. The clock ticked away in regulation, and neither team found the back of the net in the overtime period, so the contest went to a shootout.
Both teams came up empty in the first two rounds, but
Tommy Heinzman lit the lamp in the third round, only to see Iowa State do the same. Now with the shootout in a round-by-round situation, goaltending stepped up to keep the squads scoreless in rounds four through seven.
Nick Greene came through for Lindenwood in round eight and goaltender
Stephen Friedland stopped the Cyclones shooter to give the Lions the win.
Lindenwood outshot Iowa State 44-30 and Friedland stopped 28 of 30 pucks in regulation and overtime to earn the victory.
The Lions improved to 23-7-0 overall and complete play in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League with a mark of 14-2-0. Lindenwood wraps the regular season with a road series against Missouri State University February 28-29. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night at Mediacom Park in Springfield, Missouri.
