Women's Basketball Comes Up Short in Return to Competition

The Lindenwood women's basketball team (4-4, 4-4 GLVC) came up short to Lewis (9-5, 9-5 GLVC), 72-67, on Tuesday afternoon. It was first contest for the Lions since Jan. 2, due to COVID-19 guidelines.

The Lions returned to action against Lewis, battling for four close quarters, as neither team outscored the other by more than four points in any period. Lewis scored 28 of its points off of turnovers, while Lindenwood scored eight off of mistakes.

The Lions led by as much as eight points late into the third quarter, however, they were unable to hold onto the lead. In the game, there were 10 lead changes, and seven times where the matchup was tied up.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions shot 50.0 percent from the field in the opening quarter, and 42.9 percent from deep. They outrebounded the Flyers, 13-5, in the period.
  • Devin Fuhring led the team with six first quarter points.
  • Outscored, 15-12, in the second period, Lindenwood outshot Lewis 41.7 percent to 25.0 percent from the field. Lewis got to the free throw line eight times, knocking down seven of the eight attempts, while the Lions were 1-5 from the charity stripe in the quarter.
  • Lindenwood dished out five assists in the second quarter as a team, while limiting Lewis to one assist.
  • After keeping the game within three points entering halftime, 30-27, the Lions were outscored, 42-40, in the final two frames.
  • Ellen McCorkle and Julia Ruzevich led the team with 11 points in the second half.
  • In the game, Lindenwood totaled 30 turnovers, to Lewis' 10.
BOX SCORE LEADERS
  • McCorkle recorded a team-leading 18 points. J. Ruzevich had 17, and Fuhring added 12.
  • McCorkle also added 13 rebounds, giving her a double-double, as she led the squad.
  • Grace Neff dished out a team-high six assists.
  • Jamie Bain, McCorkle, and Neff each tallied a steal.
  • McCorkle blocked five shots in the contest to lead all players.
