Women's Basketball Thrills in Comeback Victory

The Lindenwood women's basketball team (5-4, 5-4 GLVC) completed a comeback victory against Rockhurst (5-5, 5-5 GLVC) on Thursday, winning 62-59.

Entering halftime, the score was within four points, at 33-29 favoring Rockhurst. The Lions shot 31.3 percent from the field in the first half, and 23.8 percent on threes.Lindenwood made it to the charity stripe seven times, knocking down four of the attempts. The team notched 21 total rebounds to the Hawks' 20, while Lindenwood dished out five more assists than the opposition, 8-7. Turnovers were nearly even, with the Lions having eight and Rockhurst having seven.

The second half saw the teams go back-and-forth before Rockhurst closed out the third quarter on a strong run, beginning the final 10 minutes with a 50-41 lead. Lindenwood would complete a comeback effort, outscoring Rockhurst by 12 points in the fourth quarter, ultimately securing the team's first win since Jan. 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions were outscored in the first quarter, 17-10, by the Hawks.
  • As a team, Lindenwood was 4-17 from the field in the opening period, and 2-11 from deep.
  • Devin Fuhring had six of the team's 10 points in the first quarter.
  • Battling back to shorten the gap, the Lions outscored the Hawks in the second quarter, 19-16.
  • The Lions shot 40.0 percent from the field, 30.0 percent from deep, and 80.0 percent from the free throw line in the second period.
  • Entering halftime, at 33-29, Ellen McCorkle led all scorers with 13 points. Fuhring added 11 points entering the midway point, while also bringing in five rebounds, tied for the most on the team with Julia Ruzevich.
  • Battling to within one point in the third quarter, the Hawks closed out the period on a hot shooting streak, to widen the lead to nine points.
  • The Lions dominated in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hawks, 21-9.
  • Lindenwood shot 41.7 percent from the field in the final frame, while going 9-12 on free throw attempts. The team trailed by as many as 12 points in the fourth period.
BOX SCORE LEADERS
  • McCorkle led all scorers with 17 points. Fuhring added 15, and J. Ruzevich notched 12. Jamie Bain recorded nine points off the bench.
  • J. Ruzevich led all players with 14 rebounds, giving her a double-double. McCorkle had eight rebounds, and Fuhring tallied six.
  • Kate Ruzevich (5) and J. Ruzevich (4) combined for nine assists.
  • Fuhring had two steals, along with two blocks. Her two blocks were tied for the team lead with K. Ruzevich.
