Burt, Ryan Score in Loss For Women's Hockey

The Lindenwood women's hockey team 0-5-0, 0-0-0 CHA dropped the first game against Minnesota State- Mankato 4-1-0, 1-1-0 WCHA  by the score of 6-2 on Friday afternoon from Mankato Minn.

GAME OVERVIEW
Lindenwood earned a power-play at the 1:42 mark of the opening period but were unable to take an early lead. After the early man advantage, each defense was strong in their own zone, as both teams had just six shots on goal through the first 15 5minutes of play. Shortly after, Meara Ryan found the back of the net late in the opening frame. Chloe Corbin and Teagan Heaslip picked up assists on the goal, the assist for Corbin marks her first collegiate point. Less than a minute later, Lindenwood added to its lead when Sierra Burt scored her first goal of the year with assists from Thea Jorgensen and Kayla Martinez. Annika Asplundh put together a strong period between the pipes stopping all 12 Minnesota State shots she faced, helping Lindenwood take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

The Mavericks made some adjustments at the break, as they compiled six of the first nine shots in the second frame. That pressure paid off as Minnesota State cut into the Lindenwood lead at the 7:02 mark of the second period, making the score 2-1. Five minutes later, the Mavericks would find the back of the net, again, tying the game 2-2. After the goal, Lindenwood registered the next three shots, but Minnesota State was able to score for the third time in the period at the 17:17 mark of the frame, taking its first lead of the game, one they would take into the second intermission.

Lindenwood kept battling for the game-tying goal in the third, putting the puck towards the net in the final frame. Minnesota State would extend its lead first, however, finding the back of the net at the 4:52. The Mavericks tallied two additional goals in the later stages of the period with goals at 11:46 and 17:57 that would end the scoring for the game. The Lions compiled 23 shots in the period, including 10 on goal, but were unable to chip into the Maverick lead.
