Women's Basketball Bested at Pittsburg State

The Lindenwood women's basketball team (0-4) was unable to collect a non-conference road victory at Pittsburg State on Wednesday evening. The Gorillas posted a 74-56 triumph over the Lions from John Lance Arena in Pittsburg, Kan. .
 
GAME OVERVIEW
Lindenwood got off to a strong start in the game, fueled by seven first-quarter points from Ellen McCorkle, which resulted in a 17-14 lead for the Lions after the opening 10 minutes of play. Pittsburg State controlled much of the action in the second quarter, outscoring Lindenwood by a 16-6 margin, as the home team built a 30-23 lead heading into halftime.

The Lions came out firing to begin the third frame, connecting on eight of their 12 field goals during the quarter, which included two makes from three-point range. With 94 second left in the third quarter, Mary McGrath knocked down a jumper to slice the Pittsburg State lead to 46-40. The Gorillas added back-to-back scores on their next two possessions to grow their lead back to 10 points. Hennessey Handy added three points over the final 34 seconds of the quarter, including a layup with just one second remaining on the clock, to bring the score to 50-43 after 30 minutes of play. Handy led the Lions with seven third-quarter points.

Pittsburg State opened the final quarter on a 12-3 run over the first 3:11 of play, swelling their lead to 16 points over Lindenwood at 62-46. The Lions were unable to shrink their deficit to fewer than 12 points for the duration of the evening, ultimately falling by a 74-56 score.
