Men's ice hockey earned a sweep of Iowa State in Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) competition with a 3-2 win Saturday and a 2-0 shutout Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
The Cyclones pushed the Lions on Saturday as they scored the first goal of the contest and led 1-0 after the opening period, but Lindenwood came back late in the second with back-to-back tallies.
Vegard Faret split the pipes first at 13:04 off a feed from
Matt Runyon, and then
Kyler Newman grabbed the puck and put it in the back of the net unassisted at 15:28 to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage, but it was temporary. Iowa State tied the game just 95-seconds later, setting up the game-winning goal from the Lions early in the third. It came off the blade of
Blake Finley on a play set up by
Kyle Diamond and
Zach Mitchell at 2:50. From there, Lindenwood clamped down on defense to run out the clock for the win.
The Lions outshot the Cyclones 29-18 and
Cooper Seedott earned the victory in goal by stopping 16 of 18 shots.
Stephen Friedland started in the crease for Lindenwood on Sunday, and he was excellent. After a scoreless first,
Andy Willis gave the Lions a 1-0 lead at 2:20 in the next frame, assisted by
Austin Wilk and
Billy Denis. A second Lindenwood goal came from
Sam Watson unassisted at 11:13 of the third. That was all the offense that Friedland needed as he stopped all 24 shots he faced to shut out Iowa State as the Lions outshot the Cyclones 39-24.
With the two wins, Lindenwood improved to 8-0-0 overall and to 6-0-0 in the CSCHL. The Lions travel to Springfield, Missouri for a two-game series against Missouri State February 26-27. The puck drops at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at the Jordan Valley Ice Park.
