Men's Ice Hockey Head Coach
Rick Zombo earned his 250th victory at Lindenwood as the Lions defeated Missouri State 5-1 Saturday night at the Jordan Valley Ice Park in Springfield, Missouri. Zombo took over as head coach at the beginning of the 2010-11 season after serving as assistant coach for the team. Â
The contest remained close through all of the opening frame and into the second until the Lions pulled away with four unanswered tallies to seal the milestone win. Lindenwood took a 1-0 lead in the waning moments of the first period when
Andy Willis split the pipes on a power play set up by
Kyler Newman and
Vegard Faret with four-seconds remaining. The Bears responded quickly with a tying goal early in the second, but the Lions regained the lead for good midway through the period.Â
Kyler Newman sounded the horn after a pass from
Jack Radley at 8:05, then Faret intercepted the puck and broke free for an unassisted score at the 15:03 mark.Â
Early in the third,
Caleb Ernst put the puck on the blade of
Jack Radley to make it 4-1, and the last Lindenwood goal came at 11:31 from
Zach Mitchell, assisted by
Jeremy Velazquez and
Brendan Murphy.
The Lions outshot Missouri State 39-27 and
Stephen Friedland stopped 26 of 27 to earn the victory in goal.
With the win, Lindenwood remained undefeated at 10-0-0 on the season. The Lions will complete the 2020-21 regular season campaign with six straight in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL), beginning with a two-game road series against Iowa State March 5-6. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night at the Iowa State Arena in Ames, Iowa.Â
