Women's Basketball Surges Past Missouri S&T

The Lindenwood women's basketball team (8-5, 8-5 GLVC) picked up a road win at Missouri S&T (3-13, 3-13 GLVC), 80-72, on Saturday.

The first half saw Lindenwood shoot 35.3 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from deep, and 75.0 percent at the charity stripe. The Lions largest lead in the first half was eight points, as they led for 16 of the first 20 minutes. The team received six second chance points to the Miners' zero. Devin Fuhring was tied for the points lead in the first half with 13, and she also added five boards.

The second half was controlled by the Lions, as they outscored Missouri S&T, 49-41. Ellen McCorkle broke out for 21 points in the second half, along with six rebounds, and three blocks. The team shot 60.0 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from deep, and 72.7 percent on free throws (8-11). A whopping 26 points were scored in the paint by the Lions, while the Miners were held to just 10 points inside. Lindenwood held the lead for over 30 total minutes in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions opened the first period with 17 points on 7-19 shooting on field goal attempts.
  • Fuhring scored 10 of her points in the opening quarter.
  • Lindenwood held the lead for nearly nine minutes in the first period.
  • Julia Ruzevich led the team with six points in the second quarter, along with two rebounds, and two assists.
  • The two teams entered halftime tied, 31-31.
  • Both squads went back-and-forth, trading buckets, before J. Ruzevich made a layup to give the Lions the 47-46 lead with 2:48 left.
  • Entering the final quarter with a three point lead, the Lions outscored the Miners, by five points in the final 10 minutes to secure the win.
  • McCorkle scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to help will the Lions to a victory.
BOX SCORE LEADERS
  • McCorkle led the way with a career-best 28 points. Fuhring was second with 22 points. J. Ruzevich added 10 points for the Lions.
  • McCorkle tallied a game-high 11 rebounds for Lindenwood.
  • Hennessey Handy and J. Ruzevich each notched five assists.
  • Handy and J. Ruzevich also had a team-best two steals.
  • McCorkle blocked four shots, the highest total among any player in the game.
RECORD NOTES
  • McCorkle's 28 points set a new career-high. Her eight free throws made are also a career-best.
  • McCorkle's four blocked shots are t-3rd for a single-game in program history.
  • Kendra Lee finished with a career-record nine points. Her five rebounds tied a previous career-high.
  • Handy's five assists tied a career-high.
