Softball Dominant in Doubleheader Sweep Against Parkside

Lindenwood softball (5-1-1, 0-0 GLVC) dominated the doubleheader against Parkside (3-4, 0-0 GLIAC) on Friday, winning game one, 8-1, and game two, 9-1.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Lions picked up a game one victory, 8-1, as Amanda Weyh through seven dominant innings on the mound. Weyh did not allow an earned run in the complete game effort, as she struck out a career-best 11 batters.

After trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the first frame, Whitney Wendel led off with a home run to left center to tie the contest, 1-1. Lindenwood would score two more runs in the inning, as they notched four total hits in the first.

The Lions added two more runs on three base hits in the bottom of the second, while Weyh worked the side in order in the top half of the frame, striking out two. Weyh struck out two more Rangers in the third without allowing a base hit.

The final three runs of the game for Lindenwood came in the bottom of the third inning, as the team scored three times without any base hits. Weyh would hold Parkside scoreless over the final six innings as she picked up her first win of the 2021 season.

GAME ONE SCORING SUMMARY GAME ONE LEADERS GAME TWO RECAP
Marina Esparza continued the Lions' dominant pitching in game two against Parkside, winning 9-1, and earning her second pitching victory of the season. Esparza threw six innings of zero earned run softball, striking out five and allowing just three base hits. Esparza has lowered her ERA to 0.44 through 16.0 innings this season.

Esparza opened the game with a three up, three down inning, while the Lions scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first frame. For the second-straight game, Lindenwood received a first inning home run, as Morgan Gersch lined a two-run shot to left field.

The bottom of the second saw the Lions bring home another run, on a triple off the bat of Whitney Wendel. The Rangers did not record a baserunner until the top of the fourth inning.

Entering the bottom of the fourth inning up, 4-1, Hannah Johnson led off with a home run to left center to push the Lions' lead to four. Esparza would respond with two strikeouts in the top of the fifth to hold the lead at 5-1.

A three-run fifth inning led Lindenwood to an opportunity to end the game in six frames, which they did, on a walk-off fielder's choice from Karli Goocher which scored Stormee Galka. This season, Lindenwood is 3-0 against Parkside and the Lions have outscored the Rangers, 24-2.
