The Lions extended their opening season winning streak to 12 games with a 4-0 shutout over Iowa State Saturday night at the Iowa State Arena in Ames, Iowa.
Lindenwood jumped out to an early lead with two goals in the opening period, the first coming off the blade of
Matt Runyon on a play set up by
Jeremy Velazquez and
Keven Lapointe at the 11:58 mark. Just under four minutes later,
Brendan Murphy sounded the horn on the power play with help from
Kyler Newman and
Vegard Faret at 15:41.
The Lions added a third goal in the early moments of the second when
Zach Mitchell scored off a pass from Lapointe at 4:57. The final score came on the power play from a Murphy feed to Faret with 10:59 left in regulation.
Lindenwood outshot the Cyclones 34 to 27 and
Stephen Friedland stopped all 27 pucks he faced to earn the second shutout victory in a row for the Lions, who improved to 6-0-0 in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) and to 12-0-0 overall on the season.
They'll return to the ice for another road series in the CSCHL against Ohio University March 12-13. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night at the Bird Arena in Athens, Ohio.
