The Lindenwood women's soccer team (2-3-0, 2-1-0 GLVC) earned its second victory in a row, this time over Illinois Springfield (4-1-1, 2-1-0 GLVC) on Sunday afternoon from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
MATCH OVERVIEW
The opening half was a defensive battle as the first shot on goal didn't come until the 21st minute. After that, each team started to settle into the game, combining for nine shots across the final 25 minutes of play.
Lindenwood was able to break the scoreless tie in the 31st minute when
Jill Wipke sent a ball into the box that was headed on by
Samantha Linderer, which found the foot of
Emily Burton who gave the Lions a 1-0 lead. The goal was Burton's first as a member of the Lions.
Lindenwood would take that 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Lindenwood was able to protect its one goal advantage throughout the half, limiting the Prairie Stars to just five shots, including two on goal in the half. Illinois Springfield battled back, however, finding the back of the net on a free kick rebound in the 84th minute, tying the score 1-1.
The game would head into extra time
With just over a minute left in the first overtime session,
Maggie Weller worker her way into the box and was fouled by a UIS defender earning a penalty kick.Â
Amanda Orlando would step up, burry the ball in the lower left corner, giving the Lions a 2-1 victory.
