Lindenwood field hockey (1-0) opened the season with a 3-1 victory at Slippery Rock (0-1, 0-0 PSAC) on Thursday. It marks the first time since Nov. 9, 2019 that the team has competed in an official regular season match.
GAME OVERVIEW
The Lions scored their opening goal of the season on a
Pauline Terwindt finish off of an assist by
Annick Giebels in the second quarter.
In the third quarter,
Makenna Rugani netted the second goal for the team on a
Sophia Swalley assist, putting the team up 2-0.
After a Slippery Rock score to close the gap, 2-1, the Lions responded with a punctuating fourth quarter goal from Rugani on an assist from
Mia Simpson.
Lindenwood outshot Slippery Rock, 13-11, in the victory on Thursday. Of the Lions' 13 shots, 10 were on goal. Taking the net for the opening time in her career, freshman
Leah Brozovich finished with six saves and just one goal allowed. Both teams registered six corners, with the Lions fouling 36 times, and the Rock fouling 26 times.
The Lions are now 2-3 against the Rock all-time, and 2-1 in the last three meetings between the two teams.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Makenna Rugani led the team with two goals scored. Pauline Terwindt added another goal scored for Lindenwood.
- Annick Giebels, Mia Simpson, and Sophia Swalley each tallied an assist in the victory.
- Simpson took a team-leading six shots, four of which were on goal. All three of Rugani's shots were registered as on goal.
- Leah Brozovich, making her first-career start in the net, played all 60 minutes.
- Brozovich finished the contest with six saves and 11 shots faced.
