Burnham Stops 45 Shots in 2-1 Win For Men's Hockey

The Lindenwood men's hockey team (3-8-0) picked up a 2-1 win in the series opener against Army (1-6-1, 0-3-0 AHA) on Friday night from West Point N.Y.

GAME OVERVIEW
Army opened the game with six of the first seven shot attempts, but Trent Burnham was sharp early. The game continued scoreless until the 13:56 mark of the opening period until the Black Knights grabbed a 1-0 lead. After the goal, Lindenwood mounted some pressure in the offensive zone on the man advantage but couldn't capitalize. The Lions continued to work, as they earned another powerplay and on that one, they found the equalizer. Caleb Price lit the lamp from a tight angle with 40 seconds to go in the period, assisted by Kyle Jeffers and Drew Kuzma. The score was 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.

The Black Knights earned an early powerplay in the second period, but Burnham was sharp, making some quality saves in the middle frame. The Lions killed off all three Army powerplay opportunities in the second period, Lindenwood started to settle in during the middle portion of the second 20 minutes of play as the Lions had a few chances, which led to a powerplay, but they couldn't capitalize. In the period, Burnham made 25 saves in the second, with the game tied 1-1 after two periods.

Lindenwood pushed for the go-ahead goal in the third period, as they earned an early powerplay opportunity. The Lions didn't score on the man advantage but two minutes later they would grab the lead as Hunter Johannes went top shelf from the slot assisted by Cade DeStefani and Aidan Yakimchuk, gabbing a 2-1 lead at the 8:32 mark of the final frame. The Lions earned another man advantage shortly after, but the Army netminder made a few great saves, keeping the score 2-1. On the other end, Burnham denied the Black Knights late in the game going post-to post, making the glove save. Army earned late powerplay opportunity, but the Lions killed it off, earning the 2-1 victory in the series opener.
