The Lindenwood women's hockey team (2-13-0, 2-4-0 CHA) fell in overtime to Stonehill (8-10-1, 6-6-0 NEWHA) by a score of 2-1 on Friday night from Bridgewater, Mass.
GAME OVERVIEW
Each team had an early powerplay opportunity in the opening period. While neither team converted, Stonehill found the back of the net just four seconds after the man advantage expired, taking a 1-0 lead at the nine-minute mark of the period. Lindenwood had some good scoring chances in the first frame, notably
Rachel Goff who led the Lions with three shots on goal, but they trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Lindenwood waisted no time fining the equalizer in the second period when Goff wheeled through the slot and fired a wrist shot past the Skyhawks netminder, which tied the game 1-1 just 53 seconds into the period. The Lions kept on the front foot, outshooting Stonehill 13-10 in the middle frame, but they were unable to grab the lead, as the score remained 1-1 after 40 minutes of play.
The game remained tied 1-1 throughout the third period, as both goaltenders kept up the strong play. Lindenwood pushed for the go-ahead goal late in the period, generating seven of the last eight shot attempts, but couldn't find the back of the net. It would be Stonehill who earned the last quality scoring chance of regulation, however, but
Natalie Ferenc made a big stop with 20 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Stonehill lit the lamp 1:18 into the overtime period to grab a 2-1 victory in the series opener.
