Aggressive Play Leads to Doubleheader Sweep for Baseball

The Lindenwood baseball team (6-6) won game a pair of games on Friday over Minot State (5-5) at Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.  The Lions won the first game by a 10-4 margin, and swept the doubleheader with a 5-4 victory in game two.
 
GAME ONE OVERVIEW
Niko Marshall started the weekend off with quality innings during his time on the bump.  Bailey Crump started the second inning with a triple to right center, later scoring on a single by Austin Schmitt.  After a bunt single by Will Lanxon, Schmitt was aggressive on the bases and came all the way around from first base to score.  The Lions held a too a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning, as Marshall continued to deal from the mound.
 
Sam Kissane and Jayce Maag led off the fourth inning with back-to-back singles.  Lanxon drew a walk before Calvin Nowak was hit by a pitch to bring in another run.  Michael Ward drove in a pair of runs on a ground-rule double to make it a 6-0 lead.  Marshall had a perfect game through 4 2/3 innings, as his day came to an end after six strong innings.
 
Minot State brought the game within three runs after the top of the sixth inning, but the Lions responded immediately.  Schmitt scored the first run of the inning on an-RBI groundout.  Genesis Nunez drove in a run on a single to right center, while Crump capped off the scoring with a two-RBI to left field.  The Beavers got one run back in the top of the eighth, but the Lions close out the first game with a 10-4 victory.

GAME TWO OVERVIEW
Minot State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lions responded in the bottom half of the inning.  With Lanxon on second base, Kolby Schulte registered a hard-hit ball past shortstop to bring in one run on the play.  The Lions took advantage of a fielding error by the Beavers, which led to a 2-1 lead.  Lindenwood added another run in the second frame, after a double by Nowak brought in Lanxon to score.
 
The Beavers put together a big inning in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on five hits and a fielding error by the Lions.  Like they did all day, the Lions answered the call.  With two outs to start the inning, Nowak drew a walk and swiped second base.  Schulte singled to centerfield, allowing Nowak to cross the play and tie the game at 4-4.  Schulte later scored on a single to center by Nunez to put Lindenwood up by one run.  Jacob Thompson shut the door for the final 2 2/3 innings, securing his second win of the year.  Logan Katen pitched well in relief as he went five quality innings, allowing just three hits and struck out four batters.
