ST. CHARLES, MO. - The Lindenwood field hockey team dropped a close matchup with Stonehill in a 3-4 overtime loss on Sunday at home.
"Today was an incredibly hard fought game," said Head Coach
Sarah Baumann. "We are very proud of the effort and energy our team came out with and continued with until the last whistle."
GAME OVERVIEW
The first period consisted of a lot of back and forth possession between the Skyhawks and the Lions. Stonehill got up first, but
Samantha Garden answered the call to tie things up at 1-1 off a pass from
Heidi van Dyk. It wasn't until a late scramble in front of the Lions' goal in the final minutes of the first period that the Skyhawks grabbed the lead, putting the visitors from Massachusetts up 2-1 heading into the second.Â
Mia Simpson kept things rolling offensively, netting a second goal for the Lions off the assist from
Rachel Bannatyne to equalize things through the duration of the second period, setting the score at 2-2 before halftime.Â
Pauline Terwindt would find the back of the net off an assist from
Izzy Folan early in the third period, giving the Lions their first lead of the game with her unassisted goal. However, the Skyhawks answered back with their third of the game, tying things right back up throughout the remainder of regulation play.Â
After eight full minutes of overtime, the Skyhawks finally broke down the strong Lions' defense, which was spearheaded by sophomore goalkeeper
Leah Brozovich, who recorded an impressive 14 saves throughout the entirety of the game.
"The scoreboard didn't go our way this time but we made huge strides as a team.," said Baumann. "We are looking forward to building off this game as we look to our next opponents."
