Roller hockey went 3-1 at the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (ECRHA) Inter-Regional January 21-22 at the Mt. Pleasant Sportszone in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania. The Lions lost to Slippery Rock in a shootout 4-3 and defeated Farmingdale State College 8-2 on Saturday, then stopped Rowan University 4-2 and defeated Slippery Rock 4-2 in a rematch on Sunday.
In the opening game of the weekend, Lindenwood fell behind the Pride in the opening period after giving up a power play goal. Slippery Rock made it 2-0 late in the second, but the Lions responded just 15-seconds later when
Brett Worster scored off a pass from
Nathan Durrans at the 8:12 mark. Another power play goal early in the third gave the Pride a 3-1 lead, but Lindenwood mounted a late comeback.
Clayton Liefeld netted the puck at 6:33 off an assist from
Jack Wedoski, then
Christian Acosta sounded the horn at 8:21 with help from
Eric Kurpiewski and Liefeld. After neither team scored in the overtime period, the game went to a shootout where Slippery Rock prevailed.
The Lions outshot the Pride 40-25 and Marky Hagar stopped 21 of 25 shots faced for Lindenwood.
The Lions had an easier time with Farmingdale in the second game on Saturday. After scoring six in the opening period while giving up just a power play goal, Lindenwood scored another two goals in the second before yielding a single tally to Farmingdale in the third.
First period goals for the Lions came from Wedoski,
Parker Winkelmann, Worster,
Bennett Blake, and two from Liefeld. Winkelmann and Kurpiewski scored for Lindenwood in the second.
In a low shooting affair, the Lions outshot the Rams 22-9 with
Jacob Robinson saving seven of the nine shots he faced to earn the victory in goal.
Parker Winkelmann earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and an assist,
Clayton Liefeld was named Star No. 2 with two goals, and
Jack Wedoski received Star No. 3 honors with a goal and an assist.
Lindenwood used two, third period goals and a Durrans hat trick to pull away from Rowan for a 4-2 victory on Sunday morning. After falling behind in the opening four minutes of the game, the Lions scored the next two, both coming off the blade of Durrans. The first came unassisted at 5:52 and the second came at 10:03 off a feed from Blake. The Profs tied the game early in the second on a power play and the score remained tied 2-2 deep into the third period until Durrans completed his hat trick t the 7:30 nark with help from Kurpiewski. Acosta added an unassisted effort at 10:46 to seal the victory.
Lindenwood outshot Rowan 26-16 Hagar stopped 14 of the 16 shots he faced for the Lions. Durrans earned Star No. 1 honors with his hat trick and Acosta was named Star No. 3 with a goal.
Lindenwood avenged its earlier loss to Slippery Rock with a 4-2 win in the rematch. The Lions controlled the Pride the whole game, outshooting them 34-8, however it was Slippery Rock that scored first late in the opening frame. Lindenwood scored the next three goals, the first coming from
Connor Bradley on the power play, assisted by Durrans just 20-seconds into the second. Winkelmann then split the pipes at 3:16 off a pass from Worster. Bradley scored another power play goal at 6:08 of the third with help from Acosta. Slippery Rock responded with its own man-advantage chance 90 seconds later to make it 3-2, but that's as close as the Pride would get. Brycon Haney-Johnson added an empty-netter with three seconds left in regulation for the final margin.
Robinson made six saves on eight shots, Bradley was named Star No. 1 with two goals, and Haney-Johnson earned Star No. 3 honors with his goal.
After the weekend, the Lions improved to 10-1 on the season. They return to the rink February 4-5 for conference action in the Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League. Lindenwood opens the weekend with a game against Arizona State at 1 p.m. Saturday. All games will be played at the Salt Creek Sports Center in Palatine, Illinois.
