Men’s Ice Hockey Stuns #15 Ohio State with Tie

The Lindenwood men's ice hockey team (1-2-1) faced a defensively strong opponent in #15 Ohio State University on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio and stood firm; forcing the Buckeyes into overtime and a shootout.

"I have a resilient group of young men that are learning to trust and rely on each other. It is an amazing accomplishment to get one point from Ohio State. I'm extremely proud of their effort," said Head Coach Rick Zombo.

The opening period was strong for both teams, however, the Buckeyes were able to secure a one goal edge at 18:33. Lindenwood recorded 14 shots in the opening period and seven saves. In faceoffs, LU secured 11 while OSU had nine.

During the second, the Buckeyes increased their lead to 2-0 at the 6:52 mark of the quarter. Lindenwood's goalie was able to record 15 saves during the period, conceding only one goal. Neither team scored a power play goal.

In the final period, Kyle Jeffers' goal landed the Lions on the board three minutes (3:04) into the period. At 17:45 in the period, Austin Fraser nailed a goal to tie the game at two-two, forcing overtime. During the overtime period, neither team was able to score. After five minutes, the score remained tied.

Officially, the game ends in a tie, however the Buckeyes finished 2-0 in the shootout.

The Lions will travel to face the University of St. Thomas on October 20th and 21st. Gametime is scheduled for 7:07 pm CST on Friday and 6:07 pm CST on Saturday. Friday's contest will be broadcast on 590 The Fan and Lindenwood's own 89.1 The Wood on Saturday.
