The Lindenwood women's hockey team (4-23-0, 4-9-0 CHA) picked up a 4-2 victory over RIT (4-23-2, 1-10-2 CHA) on Friday afternoon from Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Mo.
GAME OVERVIEW
The Lions outshot the Tigers by a margin of 17-5 in the opening period as Lindenwood controlled most of the play throughout the first period. Despite three powerplay opportunities, Lindenwood was unable to find the back of the net as the RIT netminder had the answer each time. The game remained scoreless after one period.
Lindenwood kept up the offensive pressure during the middle frame, registering another 16 shots on goal. It would be RIT who would get on the board, however as the Tigers found the back of the net at the 5:21 mark, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Lions would respond shortly after, as
Chloe Corbin won a faceoff which was picked up by
Morgan Neitzke who fired on home, tying things up 1-1 at 9:03.
Rachel Goff would get an assist on the game-tying score. Special teams would play a big factor throughout the game, as
Rachel Goff converted a shorthanded breakaway, assisted by
Sarah Dravis to give Lindenwood a 2-1 lead with less than five minutes to go in the second. Two minutes later the man advantage,
Emma Hoen was in the right spot as a wide shot from
Quinn McLaren hit Hoen and found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Lindenwood would take a 3-1 lead into the locker room.
Lindenwood held strong as a defensive unit in the final frame, killing off a pair of RIT power plays. The Tigers would pull one back at the 13:48 mark, making the score 3-2. That would be as close as they would get, however, as
Natalie Ferenc came up big between the pipes, making nine saves. Neitzke sealed the win with an empty-netter and her second goal of the game with 18 seconds left, giving Lindenwood a 4-2 win.
