ST. CHARLES, MO. - The Lindenwood men's volleyball team came out on top in a five-set overtime victory against Ohio State on Saturday night in Hyland Arena.
OVERVIEW
The Lions got off to a slow start against the Buckeyes, but midway through the set, they were able to kick it into gear. A pair of
Clay Wieter aces to make it 14-11 was really the turning point for the Lions' momentum.
Set one ended in a 25-19 come-from-behind victory for the Lions.
Ian Schuller had an outstanding set, tallying five kills on no errors, swinging a perfect 1.000 along with contributing a team-leading four digs and four block assists.
A.J. Lewis was also a huge part of the Lions' attack, also recording five kills and adding three digs and one block to his first-set stat line.
The second set went to the Buckeyes despite being a tight race. The visiting squad went on a late run, forcing the Lions into a couple detrimental errors towards the end of the set. The final score would read 19-25, heading into the third set deadlocked.
Set three opened up on a service error from Ohio State, looking like a promising start to the set. Lindenwood kept it rolling with a 3-0 run, but the Buckeyes would get moving shortly after, stringing together an attack that was hard for the Lions to stop. The final score would be 16-25, with the Buckeyes putting the Lions in too big of a hole to come out of.
The fourth set was back and forth as well, with neither team really gaining much of a lead on one another at any point in time. The Lions and Buckeyes went point for point basically up until things sat at 19-18 Lions. A Lindenwood timeout forced a service error from Ohio State, making things 20-18.
The Lions were able to hold onto their lead all the way through the final point, walking away with a 25-22 victory to cap off set four.
Set five ended in a thrilling overtime win. With lots of back and forth plays, challenges, timeouts and reversed calls, the Lions fought their way back to the top to walk away with a 22-20 victory in probably the most dramatic fashion possible.
