ST. CHARLES, Mo. --The Lindenwood baseball team (2-5) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota State Mavericks (4-2) on Sunday.
Sophomore Bennett Stice (1-1) got the win for Lindenwood. The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out six. Freshman Carson Subbert also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out two.
Offensively, the Lions were led by sophomore Marcus Heusohn, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a walk and an RBI. Junior Tyson Ludwig furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Junior Brett Bowers also chipped in for Lindenwood, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Lindenwood got on the board thanks to Ludwig's RBI double with two outs.
After the Mavericks rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Lions came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Lindenwood brought home a pair, with one run driven in by sophomore Dawson Hokuf's single, which brought the Lions lead to 3-1.
Lindenwood kept Minnesota State without a run before building their lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning. The Lions scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Joe Copeland. Minnesota State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Lindenwood still held on for the 4-2 win.
