Lindenwood Knocks off Northern Illinois 6-5 Behind Wapp's 15 Strikeouts

ST. CHARLES, Mo. --Freshman Avery Wapp dominated on Tuesday, striking out 15 Northern Illinois (9-11) hitters over nine innings of work to help propel Lindenwood softball (6-14) over the Huskies 6-5 in 10 innings.

In addition to her 15 strikeouts, Wapp threw nine innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on 10 hits and walking two for Lindenwood. Senior Keighlan Cronin (2-6) also made an impact in the circle for the Lions, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.

In the batter's box, the Lions were paced by sophomore Irelynn West, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Mya Bethany put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and two RBI. Junior Theresa Snaidauf also contributed for Lindenwood, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a triple.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Lions first put runs on the board in the first inning. Lindenwood scored twice in the inning on back-to-back run-scoring doubles from freshman Tori Hatton and sophomore Lauren Pelton.

The Lions then held the Huskies scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Senior Morgan Gersch came across to score the lone run of the inning for Lindenwood, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Lions.

Lindenwood's lead had disappeared by the time the fourth inning arrived and turned into a 4-3 Northern Illinois advantage, when the Lions re-took control at 5-4.

Northern Illinois then rallied to tie the ballgame at 5-5 before Lindenwood walked it off in the bottom of the tenth on an RBI single off the bat of West.
