Women’s Rugby Takes Third and Sixth at Tropical Sevens

The women's rugby Gold squad finished third and the Black squad took sixth in the U23 Elite Division at Tropical Sevens April 7-8 at the Tournament Sportsplex in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Competing in Pool B, the Gold team swept all three games in preliminary play on Friday, beginning with a 27-5 victory over Army West Point Black. The Lions then stopped Harvard 22-12 before topping Life University Green 36-0.

Meanwhile, the Black squad struggled in Pool A, going just 1-2 Friday afternoon. The Lions began with a 31-10 loss to Life University Black and then fell to Dartmouth College 38-7. Lindenwood Black rebounded in the final game of the day for a 35-5 win over Long Island University (LIU).

Saturday began with the Plate quarterfinals. The Gold squad shutout LIU 33-0 to start the day, but was tripped up by Life University Black 19-7 in the semifinals. Now out of contention to win the Plate championship, the Lions focused on the third-place match against Dartmouth and came away with a 26-21 win.

The Black squad was upended in the quarterfinals with a 31-7 defeat to Harvard, but the Lions rebounded nicely with a 22-0 victory over Life University Green to advance to the fifth-place match. Army West Point Black proved to be too much and Lindenwood fell 31-14, giving the Lions Black squad the sixth-place finish.

Women's rugby returns to 15's action on April 15. The Lions host the St. Louis Sabres at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at the Lindenwood Track in St. Charles, Missouri.
