Women’s Ice Hockey Wins Season Opener

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. – On Saturday night, the Lindenwood women's ice hockey team (1-0-0) faced off against Bemidji State in game one of a two-game series. In a highly contested matchup, the Lions would win over the Beavers 4-2 in their season opener.

GAME OVERVIEW
In the first period, the Lions would come out firing. Three minutes into the first period, Morgan Neitzke would put one in the back of the net after deking by two defenders. Neitzke's goal would be assisted by Sena Takenaka. Thirteen minutes later, the Lions would score off the power play. Gigi Pora would be the scorer, assisted by Neitzke and Rachel Goff. The Lions would lead 2-0 going into the first intermission.

In the second period, the Beavers would bounce back scoring at the fourteenth minute mark to lessen the Lions lead to one. Three minutes later, the Lions would rattle off another goal while on the powerplay. Quinn McLaren would be the scorer, being assisted by Sarah Davies and Goff. Strong defensive play by the Lions would keep the Beavers off the scoreboard for the rest of the period. The Lions would lead 3-1 going into the final frame.

Eight minutes into the final frame, the Beavers scored coming off a bang-bang play. In the final minutes of game, the Beavers would pull their goalkeeper in a last-ditch effort to tie the game up. With the goal open, Takenaka would a send a shot into the back of the net from her own defensive zone with one minute left in the game.

Natalie Ferenc would start in net for the Lions making 28 saves on two goals against. Taylor Wasylk won her first game as the head coach for the Lions, and it was the first time the Lions would start the season off 1-0 in the NCAA era.

"I am really proud of how our team came out tonight. They were focused, energetic, and played together for a full 60 minutes. Could not have asked for a better way to start the season", said Coach Wasylk.
