Women's Rugby Scores Over 100 In Win Over Grand Canyon

Lions move to 3-0 during their fall schedule

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Lindenwood women's rugby (3-0) continues their undefeated start to their season after taking down Grand Canyon University by a score of 106-8. It marked their most points during their fall competition schedule since 2019 when they defeated Davenport University by a score of 125-0.

"We were excited to get out to Phoenix, we love the travel aspect of the season," said assistant coach Colten Hernandez. "Weather was going to be a factor, and the heat was no joke, but the girls prepped well for it. Our main focus this week was showing up on defense, creating difficult opportunities for the GCU to attack from, I think we did that quite well and was proud that the work we did in training paid off."

After Grand Canyon kicked off the scoring in the first half, Hailey Proctor scored first for the Lions with a successful try during the seventh minute of play. He'Lena Dou'Ble followed that two minutes later with another successful try.

Jule-Dine Kawaauhau (16'), Lola Unga (20') and Nevaeh Elliott (24') all scored tries for the Lions before GCU scored on a penalty conversion during the 31st minute. Jasmine Fehoko and Unga would score again for Lindenwood before the half.

Right after the break Lopez scored his first of the day with a try followed by Brianna Beath in the 49th minute. Ava Reuter followed with a score in the 54th minute. Madison Jersey would convert a score in the 67th minute before Meg Maiava scored back-to-back tries in the span of two minutes.

Lindenwood would wrap up the scoring after Lucia del Campo scored in the 76th minute and Irie Farley scored twice in the 78th and 80th minute to finish off Lindenwood's historic win. Joselin Lopez went 12 for 16 on conversions on Saturday afternoon.

"I thought the game showed a lot of depth and connection. Everyone playing worked well in support and setting each other up. We're starting to build up a cohesiveness that helped us set a rhythm on the pitch today. We've set a great base to build off of for our next games," said Ava Denner.

Lindenwood will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 2nd when they take on Penn State University in Columbus, Ohio. For more information go to lindenwoodlions.com.
