Men's ACHA Division II ice hockey earned a sweep over Trine University with a 9-2 win Saturday night and a 6-0 shutout Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
In the series opener, the Lions outshot the Thunder 69-11. Lindenwood drew a hooking penalty just 17-seconds into the game and
Stanley Lucas capitalized 13-seconds later with help from
Sam Watson and
Austin Meers. Trine scored at even-strength just over eight minutes later and the opening period ended in a 1-1 tie.
Trent Sylvester gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage at the 2:22 mark of the second on a play set up by
Sean McMahon and
Logan Millhausen, but the Thunder tied it once again, however Lindenwood dominated from there, scoring the final seven goals of the contest.
Sam Watson went back-to back with his 16
th and 17
th goals of the season. The first came at even strength at 10:26, assisted by
Steve Avalone and
Stanley Lucas, then Avalone set up a power play effort at 16:17.
Brett Robinson netted the final score of the period at 18:46 on a play set up by
Zac Maupin and
Gage Vierzba and it was 5-2 in favor of the Lions.
Vierzba called his own number at 2:54 of the third with help from Maupin and
Brett Robinson, then
Jacob Behnen split the pipes at 9:07, assisted by
Chase McClellan and
Adam Rischbieter. Robinson scored his second of the game at 15:40 on a play set up by Watson and Lucas, then Watson completed his hat trick with 16-seconds remaining in regulation.
Ethan Paulin-Hatch stopped nine of the 11 shots he faced in goal to earn the victory. Lindenwood went 2/5 on the power play while holding Trine scoreless on just one man-advantage chance.
After putting 69 shots on goal in the first game, the Lions peppered the Thunder goaltender with another 56 pucks on Sunday in the shutout win, 25 of them coming in the opening period alone.
Rischbieter sounded the horn for Lindenwood first off a feed from Vierzba at 5:57 of the first, then Meers hit the back of the net with help from Behnen and McMahon at 15:21. McClellan added to the offensive outburst just over a minute later, assisted by
Ryan Granville and Meers and it was 3-0 Lions.
McMahon made it 4-0 at the 6:28 mark of the second on a play set up by Vierzba and Robinson, then Robinson netted a power play goal after a major high-sticking penalty on Trine. Kruger and Vierzba earned the assists on the play that gave Lindenwood a 5-0 lead. A nice pass from Watson led to the final score of the game off the blade of
Michael Mullen for his 18
th of the season with 6:53 left in regulation.
The Lions outshot the Thunder 56-24 with
Ethan Paulin-Hatch and
Justin Grenon combining to stop all 24 shots faced in the game. Grenon was credited with the victory with five saves he took the ice in relief of Paulin-Hatch at the 2:37 mark of the first. Paulin-Hatch returned at the 12:45 mark and played the rest of the game, stopping all 19 shots he faced.
With the two wins, Lindenwood improved to 28-9 on the season. After a weekend off, the Lions wrap up the regular season with a single contest against the Maryville University D1 squad February 22 at the Maryville Ice Center in Chesterfield, Missouri.
