Men's ACHA Division II ice hockey earned a two-game sweep over Marian (Wisc.) University February 3-4, taking the Sabres 8-1 on Saturday and 6-2 on Sunday at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
In the opener, the Lions overwhelmed Marian with five goals in the opening period.
Eli Roofe scored first, assisted by
Mason Kruger and
Praveen Dhaliwal at 3:26. A Sabres tripping penalty led to a power play goal from
Sam Watson at 7:01 with help from
Austin Meers and
Stanley Lucas.
Adam Rischbieter and
Gage Vierzba set up Kruger at 12:19, then Dhaliwal sounded the horn off a feed from
Anthony Tinsley at 14:11. The last goal of the frame came off the blade of
Michael Mullen on a play set up by Watson and
Ryan Granville at 14:57. The Lions had a chance to score a sixth goal when Tinsley was awarded a penalty shot, but he wasn't able to get the puck past the goaltender.
With time running down in the first, Marian was called for a five-minute major boarding penalty with 45-seconds remaining. It carried over into the second and Lindenwood took advantage just 15-seconds later when Lucas netted a shot on a play set up by Watson and Granville. A Lions cross checking penalty led to the only score from the Sabres with 2:22 remaining in the period and Lindenwood led 6-1.
The Lions added a couple more goals in the third. Watson scored his 15
th of the season off a pass from
Jacob Behnen at 9:31, then
Trent Sylvester set up Rischbieter with 3:33 left in regulation.
Lindenwood outshot Marian 56-23 and
Ethan Paulin-Hatch stopped 22 of the 23 pucks he faced to earn the victory in goal.
The Lions built another big lead over the Sabres in Sunday's contest, but it took until the second period for it to happen. After the first 20-minutes went by scoreless, Lindenwood split the pipes four times in a span of just over three minutes beginning with a Granville goal at the 4:43 mark at even strength, assisted by Rischbieter and Vierzba. Marian was called for roughing and the Lions capitalized with the 16
th goal of the season from Lucas at 6:20. Granville and
Chase McClellan earned the assists. Just 37-seconds later,
Sean McMahon took control of the puck and sent it to Mullen for a goal to make it 3-0. Another minute later, Vierzba and Sylvester combined to set up
Zac Maupin for his 14
th of the season.
A Lindenwood boarding penalty led to a Sabres power play goal at 11:53, but the Lions countered with their second man-advantage score of the game when Lucas hit the back of the net with 89-seconds remaining in the period on a play set up by Meers and Granville. Marian was called for checking from behind with 20-seconds left and that penalty time carried into the third for Lindenwood, but the Sabres turned a quick steal into a short-handed goal. The Lions were given another power play with just under seven-minutes remaining in regulation and Meers capitalized on the 23
rd assist of the season from Watson at 13:14.
Lindenwood outshot Marian 48-19 and
Justin Grenon stopped 17 of the 19 shots he faced to earn the victory in goal.
With the two wins, the Lions improved to 26-9 for the year. With the regular season quickly wrapping up, Lindenwood hosts Trine University February 10-11. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night and at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center.
