Women's ACHA ice hockey earned a two-game sweep over Grand Valley State University with a 6-1 win on Saturday and a 4-3 overtime victory on Sunday at Griff's Georgetown in Hudsonville, Michigan.
In the series finale, the Lions opened up a 1-0 lead after a Lakers roughing penalty led to
Ava Bilton power play goal off a pass from
Loki Antonio at 12:58 in the first. Lindenwood extended its lead when Sarah Nicholl and Alison Blaskovich set up
Lauren Miller for her first of the season at 8:21 in the second, but GVSU cut into the deficit just 15-seconds later, then tied the contest on a power play at 10:47.
The game was tied 2-2 heading into the final period, but the Lions quickly re-took a one-goal lead after Hilary Pierce fed Antonio for her 14
th of the season at 1:10. The Lakers scored the equalizer just over three minutes later and the contest remained tied 3-3 through the rest of regulation, forcing an extra five-minute session.
There weren't many scoring chances for either team in overtime, but Antonio capitalized on one of them for the game-winner at 2:58, assisted by
Ardyn Hawryshko.
Lindenwood outshot Grand Valley State 43-18.
Jordan Tung stopped nine of the 12 shots she faced in 44:37 of game-time, while
Evi Allerding stopped all six shots she faced in 18:21 in a relief role. The Lions went 1/4 on the power play while yielding a single goal on three Lakers man-advantage chances.
In the opener on Saturday, Lindenwood took control in the second period with three straight goals. Antonio scored the first at 4:21 on a play set up by Bilton and Marina Evert. Grand Valley State was called for a major five-minute interference penalty at the 7:36 mark and that led to a pair of Lions power play goals.
Devyn Doti lit the lamp first with help from
Jessica Wither and Bilton at 10:15, then Hawryshko sounded the horn at 11:14 on a play set up by
Madison Teague and Pearce.
Lindenwood really pulled away in the third. Bilton split the pipes at 1:18 off a pass from Wither to make it 4-0, then
Katelynn Weeks sounded the horn 30-seconds later, assisted by Bilton and Teague. Antonio made it 6-0 at 9:24 with Hawryshko and Teague getting the helpers. A turnover led to the only Lakers goal, an unassisted effort with 7:46 remaining in the contest, but that was the only offense that Grand Valley State could muster.
The Lions outshot the Lakers 35-19 and Allerding stopped 18 of the 19 shots she faced to earn the win in goal. Lindenwood scored two power play goals on six chances while holding GVSU scoreless on four man-advantage opportunities.
With the two wins, the Lions improved to 7-13-4 overall. They'll wrap up the regular season with games against Maryville and McKendree in Women's Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) action February 16 and 17. Lindenwood enters the weekend with a conference record of 2-10-1. The opening faceoff against the Saints is set for 9:30 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri and the puck drops at 7 p.m. against the Bearcats at the Metro Rec-Plex in O'Fallon, Illinois.
