MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. – On Saturday afternoon, the Lindenwood women's ice hockey team took on Syracuse for their second matchup of the weekend. In historic fashion, the Lions would win 5-4 in overtime over the Orange, breaking the program record for most wins a season with eleven.
GAME OVERVIEW
In the first period, the Orange were able to find the net first, scoring off a power-play goal at the 1:41 mark. Ten minutes later,
Quinn McLaren would tie the game up at one. McLaren's goal would be assisted by
Molly Henderson and
Olivia Grabianowski. At 14:54 in the period, the Lions would find their first lead of the night, coming off a back handed shot from
Morgan Neitzke, assisted by
Sidney Jackel. With 1:55 left in the period, Lindenwood would extend their lead to two coming from a Grabianowski shot. On Grabianowski's goal, Henderson would be attributed the assist. At the end of the first frame, the Lions would lead 3-1.
In the second period, scoring would be stifled for the first eleven minutes of the period. At 11:19, Syracuse would score an even strength goal, to cut the Lions lead to one. The Lions would rebound quickly, scoring at the 11:46 mark to regain the two-goal lead. Jackel would be attributed the goal, assisted by Neitzke. Following the end of the period, the Lions would lead 4-2 going in to the third frame.
In the third period, the Orange controlled the offensive zone scoring two goals to force overtime.
In overtime,
Sarah Davies would score the game winner off a slapshot from the point, assisted by
Emma Hoen and Neitzke, at the 3:33 mark in the period.
Natalie Ferenc started in net for the Lions, making 28 saves.
After this matchup, the Lions moved to 11-15-2 and 6-8-2 in conference play. Three program records were broken in this matchup. The records include most wins a season with 11, Neitzke breaking the career points record with 86 and Neitzke breaking the most points in a season record with 39.
