Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Marquette

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – On Friday, the Lindenwood men's lacrosse team took on the Marquette Golden Eagles. In a highly touted affair, the Lions fell to the Golden Eagles by a score of 16-5.

GAME OVERVIEW
In the first quarter, Marquette would score the first four goals of the game. At the 7:09 mark of the quarter, the Lions were able to find their first goal of the game, coming from an Adrian Thompson shot. After one quarter, the Lions would trail 4-1 to the Golden Eagles. The Lions had nine shots in the period while the Golden Eagles had 13. AJ Preachuk would make five saves in the frame.

Marquette would score back-to-back goals to start off the second quarter. The Lions would bounce back scoring one of their own coming from junior midfield, Noah Wehrman, at the 9:33 mark in the quarter. The Golden Eagles would tally the final goal in the frame, leading 7-2 going into halftime. In the second quarter, the Lions had eight shots while Marquette had thirteen.

In the third quarter, Marquette would string six straight goals to start off the second half. With 2:01 left in the third, freshman, Connor Engel, would score his first career goal as a Lion, to cut Marquette's lead to ten. A minute later, Marquette would score the final goal of the quarter, with the Lions trailing 14-3 going into the fourth. In the third, the Lions had six shots while the Golden Eagles had 15.

In the fourth quarter, the Lions would score back-to-back goals at the 11:38 and 10:12 mark to cut the Lions deficit to nine. Wehrman would score the first goal of the frame for the Lions, and freshman, Jack Martinez, would be attributed the second goal, assisted by Engel. The Golden Eagles would score a pair of goals to end the game.

Preachuk started in net for the Lions, making 14 stops. Wehrman and Engel would lead the Lions in points with two. The Lions would have a total of 35 shots in the game, while the Golden Eagles had 50.
