The Lindenwood men's volleyball team (1-2) fell in four sets to No. 17 UC San Diego (5-0) on Friday night in Northridge, Calif.
MATCH OVERVIEW
The match was tied early 7-7, before UCSD went on a 4-0 run to gain some separation. The Tritons continued to grow the lead and pushed it to seven at 18-11 after an ace, which forced a Lindenwood timeout. A pair of kills from
Carter Stenmark and a block by
Owen Walsh and
Ian Schuller closed the gap to 18-14. The Black and Gold continued to chip away and got within two at 22-20. The Tritons were able to hold onto the first frame, winning 25-22.
Aces were wild for Lindenwood to begin the second, picking up four in the first half of the set. Strong serving helped them take a 13-7 lead. UC San Diego went on a 5-0 run of their own to pull within one. The back-and-forth play continued until Lindenwood took a two-point advantage at 23-21 after a
Aidan Curcuru and
Brendan Louthain block. The Lions evened the match with a second set win, 25-22.
The Tritons won the race to 10 in set three and held a slim 10-9 lead. Still down 12-10, Lindenwood went on a 4-1 run to take a 14-13 lead after a kill from Schuller. The Tritons settled in and took a 19-17 lead late in the stanza. UCSD continued to grow the lead, which forced a Lindenwood timeout. Down 24-19, the Lions rattled off three-straight points to force a timeout the other way. The Tritons hung on and grabbed a 2-1 lead heading to the fourth
Lindenwood jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the fourth, but UCSD responded with an 8-0 run to go up 15-11. The Lions were able to get back within one at 17-16, but that's as close as they would get, falling 25-21 in the fourth.
