MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. - Lindenwood Women's Hockey fell in Overtime to Syracuse on Friday night in Centene Community Ice Center by a score of 2-1.
Michaela Paulinyova lit the lamp for the Lions in the loss with 7:32 left to go in regulation.
The first two periods saw no goals scored as both
Lexington Secreto for Lindenwood and Ava Drabyk for Syracuse were both excellent in between the pipes. Secreto and Drabyk both recorded nine saves in the first period and leading the way for the Lions in shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of action was
Tatiana Blichova who had three. The Lions had a couple of opportunities to score in the first, but couldn't convert on their only power play of the period as they recorded just one shot on goal from Blichova. In the second period, Secreto was huge for Lindenwood as she made 18 saves to keep Syracuse off the scoreboard. The Lions were outshot 18-6 in the second, and the score remained tied heading into the final period.
The Lions finally broke through in the third period on
Michaela Paulinyova's third goal of the season. After a Syracuse defender misplayed the puck in their defensive zone, Paulinyova retrieved the puck from just inside of the blue line and fired a shot from the middle of the zone. The shot created a soft rebound and Paulinyova was able to poke it in to give the Lions a 1-0 lead with 7:32 remaining in the contest. Lindenwood's lead would last for 17 seconds as Syracuse tied it up at one after the Lions turned it over in their defensive zone with just over seven minutes to play. Later in the period, the Lions killed off a big power play opportunity by Syracuse, and the game headed to Overtime. In the extra period, the Lions were called for tripping less than a minute into Overtime and the Orange converted on their third power play of the night to take the first game of the series.
Lindenwood finished the game with 23 shots on goal and were led by
Tatiana Blichova who had five.
Paige Cline and
Hannah Dods followed Blichova as each of them had three shots on goal in the contest.
Lexington Secreto made 35 saves in the game and finished six saves shy of her career-high. Game two of the series with Syracuse will be tomorrow afternoon with puck drop set for 1 p.m.
