DULUTH, Minn. – The Lindenwood men's hockey team (9-10-0) dropped the front end of their two-game series at No. 5 Minnesota Duluth (15-6-0, 7-5-0 NCHC) by a score of 6-3 on Friday night. Special teams were the difference in the game, with the Bulldogs converting for three power play goals while the Lions finished 0-3 with the man advantage.
Game Overview
The fireworks started early with UMD's Grayden Siepmann taking advantage of an early power play opportunity to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead at the 3:55 mark, but Lindenwood quickly responded with a
Jacob Fletcher goal on an assist by
Charles Savoie less than a minute later.
The Lions capitalized on their newfound momentum with a
Brady McIsaac goal at the 8:25 mark to grab a 2-1 lead, with
Anselmo Rego getting credit for the assist. It was McIsaac's first career goal at the collegiate level.
However, Duluth responded with three unanswered goals, including a pair by the Plante brothers and another power play goal, this time scored by Callum Arnott. The offensive outburst gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead heading into the first intermission.
Just under four minutes into the second period,
Charles Savoie cut the deficit in half with a goal assisted by
Olivier Houde and
Michael Bevilacqua. The score remained 4-3 until Grayden Siepmann touched twin at the 11:03 mark of the frame for another power play score, making UMD 3-5 with the man advantage through the first 40 minutes.
After combining for eight total goals through the first two periods, neither team was able to find the back of the net in period three until the 17-minute mark, when the Bulldogs extended their lead to 6-3 on an unassisted goal off the stick of Daniel Schlaine.
The Lions were doubled up on shots in the contest, with UMD creating a 44-22 advantage in attempts on net. Goaltender
Klayton Knapp collected 38 saves against his former team, matching his season second-best.
Meanwhile,
Charles Savoie recorded his seventh multi-point performance (1g-1a) of the season, which is most on the team.
Jacob Fletcher and
Michael Bevilacqua both registered points for the fourth consecutive game, giving them the longest active point streaks among Lindenwood skaters.
