ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Lindenwood baseball team (10-12, 0-2 OVC) took a tough 5-4 loss against Eastern Illinois (12-8, 2-0 OVC) at Lou Brock Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Lions battled back from a three-run deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth before falling just short in the ninth.
LU totaled eight hits in the contest, including six in their final three at-bats.
Tanner Simpson was the only Lion to record multiple hits, going 2-4 with an RBI.
Seth Benes was solid on the mound for Lindenwood, allowing just two earned runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts through 6.1 innings pitched.
How it Happened
After both teams moved runners into scoring position with nothing to show for it through the first two innings, Eastern Illinois broke through first in the top of the third with a James Love RBI groundout with runners on the corners that scored Tyler Castro.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the seventh, when EIU tacked on two more runs with a Brett Stanley two-out double down the right field line with runners on second and third.
Lindenwood got one back in the bottom of the seventh with
Kam Edwards singling and stealing second before being driven in by a
Tanner Simpson RBI base hit to right center.
After holding Eastern scoreless in the top of the eighth, a
Will Geary double to right center set the stage for
Jake Radosevich, who tied the game with a two-run blast over the wall in left-center field.
However, EIU immediately responded with two more runs in the top of the ninth as Chris Worcester delivered a two-out double to deep left center with runners on second and third to recapture the lead for the Panthers.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Kam Edwards reached on a throwing error by the EIU shortstop and stole second before coming around to score on another throwing error, this time by the Eastern pitcher on a softly hit groundball down the first base line.
Now trailing by just a run, back-to-back singles by
Ethan Cantareira and
Charlie Isom-McCall loaded the bases with one out for LU. However, the Lions rolled into a 4-6-3 double play to cut the rally short.
