Men's Volleyball Reverse Sweeps #17 Ohio State On Saturday To Clinch #3 Seed In MIVA Tournament

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Lindenwood Men's Volleyball team (20-6, 11-5 MIVA) came back from down two sets on Saturday afternoon and reverse swept Ohio State by winning the final three sets to end their regular season by setting the Lindenwood NCAA Era record for the most wins in a single season with 20. The win over the Buckeyes solidified the #3 seed for the Lions in the MIVA Tournament next weekend, and LU will be hosting #6 Lewis on Saturday, April 18.

The first set saw Ohio State start on a 15-5 run and cruised to an opening set victory by a score of 25-14. Colin Shin got the start on Senior Day and led Lindenwood in kills in the first set with three, followed by Matt Muehlnickel who had two. OSU was able to outhit Lindenwood .500 to .036 in the first set, and the Buckeyes had 13 kills compared to six from the Lions. The second set was similar to set one where Ohio State used a 9-2 run early on in the set to open up a 12-5 lead. Brendan Louthain cut the deficit to five a few serves later to make the score 12-7 with a service ace, but OSU's early run was too much for the Lions to overcome as the Buckeyes took the second set by a score of 25-15. Caden Whiteside had two kills to lead LU in the second set, but the Lions were limited to six kills for the second straight set and hit .167 compared to the Buckeyes' .444.

In the third set, Louthain had five kills and Owen Walsh added two kills in his first set played for the week. Lindenwood started to flip the script by using an early 3-0 run to grab a 7-5 lead behind Amir Grant and Louthain each picking up a kill and a block assist. The rest of the set turned into a battle as the biggest lead for either team was three at 9-6 in favor of the Lions after Louthain added another service ace. Late in the set with the Buckeyes up 22-21 and threatening to sweep the match, Matt Muehlnickel sparked a 4-1 run with a kill to tie the set at 22 and Louthain finished off the run with his fourth service ace of the match to force a fourth set with a 25-23 win. Set four required more grit out of the Lions as the set saw 13 ties. Caden Whiteside had two late kills and Zach Solomon added his third service ace of the set as the duo combined for  a 3-1 run as Lindenwood won the fourth set by a score of 29-27 and forced a winner-take-all set five. The defense was a big part of the fourth set as the Lions limited Ohio State to a hitting percentage of -.048 and recorded 4.5 total blocks with Solomon, Grant, and Walsh each having two block assists to keep LU in the match.

Prior to this afternoon's match, the Black and Gold entered the fifth set with a record of 3-0 in five set matches this season, and improved their record to 4-0 with a 15-11 set five victory en route to a reverse sweep and completed the season sweep over Ohio State. Owen Walsh had back-to-back kills to give Lindenwood a 6-5 lead, and Matt Muehlnickel had back-to-back service aces late in the set to put the Lions in front 10-6 behind a 5-1 run. Whiteside ended the match with back-to-back kills as the Redshirt Freshman finished the match with 10 kills, and was two behind Brendan Louthain, who had a team-high 12 kills in the win over the Buckeyes. The defense ended the match with 11 total blocks, which was the second most in a match this season. Amir Grant led the way with one solo block and six block assists at the net, while Lincoln Geist led the team with five digs defensively.

Lindenwood will now stay at home for the next week as they will prepare for the MIVA Conference Tournament. The Lions will host #6 Lewis on Saturday, April 18 with first serve TBA.
