Derek Schaub is entering his 24th season as a head coach at Lindenwood in 2024-25, including his 13th year as the men’s golf head coach.
During the 2023-24 season, the Lions captured the Lindenwood Invitational by 15 strokes. The Lions also took home a third place finish at the Carpenter-Chaney Classic in April. The black and gold had four student-athletes earn All-OVC accolades as Lindenwood concluded its season with a fifth-place finish at the OVC Championships.
The Lindenwood men’s golf team capped off its first NCAA Division I season with a fourth-place finish at the OVC Championships, advancing all the way to match play. As a team, the Lions posted an average team score of 296 across nine tournaments. During the year, Lindenwood picked up its first tournament victory at the Division I level as the Lions Lindenwood defeated Omaha, Missouri State, and Morehead State to capture the Carpenter-Chaney Classic tournament title. Individually, Renato Filho set a new school record, carding a 62 in the second round of the Big Blue Intercollegiate at Hermitage Golf Club in Hermitage, Tenn. on April 11.
The Lindenwood men's golf team wrapped its 2021-22 campaign with a sixth-place finish at the GLVC Championships. Over the course of their 10 tournament between the fall and spring seasons, the Lions finished in the top three on five occasions, including a team title at the Rockhurst Spring Invitational in mid-March.
In a shortened 2019-20 season, the Lions saw several student-athletes earn GLVC honors. Liam Bentein and Joe MacNeil were both selected to the All-GLVC squad following highly-successful seasons, and Caleb Picker earned the conference's Sportsmanship Honor.
The 2018-19 season was one of the best in program history. The Lions won the MIAA Championship (team and individual) and the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional (team and individual), earning a spot in the NCAA National Championship, where they finished eighth. Markus Lindgren was the MIAA individual champion for the second year in a row and earned PING All-Region Accolades. Senior Yente Van Doren won the individual crown at the NCAA Central Regional and was named a PING All-American. In the classroom, Brad Currier was an Academic All-American and an Elite 90 recipient.
Lindenwood set several program firsts during the 2016-17 school year. The Lions finished third in the final MIAA standings, and won the Dave Falconer Classic and Upper Iowa Invitational. Lindenwood earned its third regional bid and finished third at the regional tournament. The third-place finish gave the Lions its first appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championships, where it finished 17th in the nation.
Lindenwood set up a program record by averaging 293.71 shots a round, 3.42 shots better than its previous record. Lindenwood finished the year ranked 50th in the national rankings, its highest finish at the NCAA level. Schaub helped coach Yente Van Doren, who set a Lindenwood single-season record with a 72.31 average for the year.
Van Doren was also an all-MIAA performer and named to the all-region team. Academically, 10 golfers were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Ryan Dyck was also named a second-team Academic All-American, an Academic All-District selection, and the NCAA men’s golf Elite 90 award winner. Brad Currier earned the MIAA Academic Excellence Award.
2015-16 was also one of the best years for the men’s golf program under Schaub. The Lions finished third in the final MIAA standings, including a second-place showing at the MIAA Championships. Lindenwood earned its second all-time bid to the NCAA Regionals, and it finished tied for ninth in that event. Dyck and Van Doren were both all-MIAA selections, and Van Doren was also named the MIAA Freshman of the Year and was an all-region pick.
Academically, Dyck was named to the Academic All-District team, and he was a MIAA Scholar-Athlete. Nine men’s golfers were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, and Brad Currier and Justin Stacer were MIAA Academic Excellence Award recipients.
In 2014-15, Lindenwood finished fourth in the MIAA standings for the second straight seasons. A young Lions squad that was almost entirely sophomores and freshmen had a strong finish to the season, including tying for first at the Illinois-Springfield Invitational and finishing third at the MIAA Championships. Schaub led one golfer to all-MIAA honors in Corbin Adams.
Off the course, three golfers earned the MIAA Academic Excellence Award, and eight were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
In 2013-14, Schaub led Lindenwood to a NCAA Regional appearance in the program’s first season of postseason eligibility. The Lions finished sixth at the regional tournament and came within 10 shots of advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championships.
Lindenwood finished fourth in the MIAA standings and two golfers were named to the all-conference team. Ryan Dyck was the MIAA Freshman of the Year, and Jake Smock was also an all-conference selection. Greg MacAulay was named to the Ping All-Region team. MacAulay also earned Academic All-American honors for the second straight season, becoming the first Lindenwood athlete to win that honor multiple times. Nine golfers were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, Dyck was a MIAA Scholar-Athlete, and three golfers received the MIAA Academic Excellence Award.
In his first season as Lindenwood men’s golf coach, Schaub helped the Lions finish fourth or better in seven of the ten tournaments that they played in. Lindenwood took first place in two tournaments, including the Lindenwood Fall Invitational which included every MIAA school. The Lions also won the Drury Pasta House Classic in the spring. Lindenwood finished third out of 12 teams at its first appearance at the MIAA Championship.
Eric Isacsson and Oscar Isacsson both earned all-MIAA honors during the season and Eric was also named to the all-region team. Greg MacAulay was named a Capital One second-team Academic All-American and he also earned the MIAA Academic Excellence Award. Eric Isacsson was a MIAA Scholar-Athlete and a total of 10 men’s golfers were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Schaub was the head coach of the men’s lacrosse team in 2012 and 2013 as the program made the transition from the club to the NCAA Division II level. In 2013, Lindenwood went 8-5 overall and finished fifth in the ECAC with a 3-4 mark. Graeme Hossack was named to the all-ECAC first-team and Mike Meagher was a second-team all-conference selection. Carter McCracken was a Capital One Academic All-District selection and 17 Lions were named to the ECAC all-Academic team.
In 2012, Lindenwood’s first against a NCAA schedule, Schaub led the men’s lacrosse team to a winning record at 8-7 and the Lions finished third in the WILA with a 4-4 conference mark. Lindenwood went 5-2 down the stretch including a victory over conference champion Colorado Mesa. Three of the team’s losses came by just a single goal, including versus nationally-ranked Pfeiffer.
Schaub coached eight players to all-conference honors in 2012, including first-team selections for Richard Wilson and Grame Hossack. Two others received second-team awards and four were named honorable mention.
Schaub began the men’s lacrosse program at Lindenwood in 2003 and was the head coach that first season. He led the Lions to an 8-0 conference record and a first-place finish in the GRLC Division B Tournament. In the championship game of that conference tournament, the Lions defeated Kansas State by a pair of goals, with the winning score coming with just 30 seconds left in the game. Among the players Schaub coached that year was Brian Smith who was named MVP of the GRLC Tournament.
After coaching ice hockey for the next seven seasons, Schaub returned to lacrosse in 2011. He led Lindenwood to a 16-7 overall record, including a perfect 12-0 mark at Hunter Stadium. Lindenwood won its conference tournament and advanced to the MCLA National Tournament.
Schaub has been a coach at Lindenwood since 2001-02, when he became the head coach of the Lindenwood roller hockey program. He had a 40-1-0 overall record in roller hockey and led Lindenwood to the 2002 and 2003 national championships. Those titles were the foundation for one of the school’s most dominating programs—roller hockey won eight national championships from 2002-2010.
After starting men’s lacrosse in 2003, Schaub began another program the next year when he became the head coach of the men’s ice hockey team. Over its first seven years, the Lions went 217-57-3 under Schaub. The program appeared in three ACHA national championship games and won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010.
Schaub is also an Assistant Athletics Director at Lindenwood in charge of working with outside organizations on the scheduling of Lindenwood facilities.
