Melanie Schmit is entering her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Lindenwood women’s basketball team in 2013-14.

In her first season, Schmit helped turn around the Lindenwood program. The Lady Lions went from nine wins in 2009-10 to 21 wins in 2010-11. Lindenwood finished second in the HAAC, had three all-conference performers, and one All-American. The next season, Lindenwood had its first back-to-back winning seasons in 10 years after the squad went 17-10 during its transition season to the NCAA level.

Schmit comes to Lindenwood after spending 20 years as a high school coach. She spent 17 years at New Haven High School and three years at Troy High School.

While the head coach at New Haven, Schmit helped start the women’s basketball program in 1994 and compiled an overall record of 177-69. She led the Shamrocks to the 1A Missouri State Championship in 2002 and was named the 1A Coach of the Year. She also helped New Haven win five conference and four district championships.

At Troy, Schmit led the Trojans to a 50-32 record and played in the district title game for three straight seasons. Schmit was named Coach of the Year one time by the Lincoln County Journal.
