The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team pitched its first shutout of the year, defeating visiting Michigan State, 3-0. Despite being outshot 33-27, the Lady Lions were led by goalie
Alexa Bauer, who was making her first start of the year.
After skating to a scoreless tie in the first period, Lindenwood went to work in the second, scoring all three of its goals. Five minutes in,
Janella Brodett scored on a power play opportunity to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead. Minutes later,
Robbyn Keating added another power play goal. Lindenwood's
Krystal Martin netted an even strength score late in the period to cap the scoring.
Bauer stopped all 33 shots she faced and was part of a Lindenwood defense that killed seven shorthanded chances. The Lady Lions, on the other hand, converted on two of their four power play opportunities.
On Saturday, the Lady Lions won the home opener against the Spartans, 5-3.
The Spartans opened the scoring with an even strength goal, but the Lady Lions tied it up with a power play goal by
Lisa Moreau.
Ashley Rebeck netted an even strength goal with 30 seconds remaining the first period to give Lindenwood a 2-1 advantage heading into the second.
Mandy Dion scored midway through the second frame and
Sarah Oliphant stole the puck at center ice and slipped one past the Michigan State goaltender to push the Lady Lions' lead to three. The road team would make it interesting, cutting the deficit to one, on a goal late in the second period and adding another in the third. With just over three minutes remaining in the game,
Shannon Murphy put it away, notching an even strength goal.
Rebecca Bernet stopped 15 of 18 shots to earn her third win of the season.
Lindenwood (4-0, 2-0) will travel to Western Michigan next weekend for a pair of CSCHL games, starting Saturday, at 6:00 p.m.
