Just eight days after losing to Bellarmine University (Ky.) on its home turf, the Lindenwood field hockey team returned the favor, knocking off the Knights, 2-1 in overtime.
Five minutes into the sudden death overtime period,
Haley McCulloch connected with
Lauren Cato who fired the game winner on an impressive reversed stick chip. The goal gave the Lions their first overtime victory this season and their first road victory.
Bellarmine scored first off a penalty corner goal from Emily West at the 13 minute mark in the first half. The Lions responded when
Kayleigh Harrower notched her first goal of the year nine minutes later.
Bellarmine had several opportunities in the second half, but Lindenwood goalie
Caitlin Erickson was impressive stopping five shots. The Lions' defense as a unit was just as good, killing the Knights' seven penalty corner opportunities including a critical stand with just less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
The Knights held the advantage in penalty corners 12-5 and outshot the Lions, but Lindenwood did not allow Bellarmine to attempt a shot in overtime.
Erickson made eight saves to pick up the win.
Lindenwood (4-5) will travel to Hendrix College (Ark.) next Saturday. The Lions won the previous matchup between the two schools on September 18, 2-0.
