Lindenwood field hockey won its third straight contest on Wednesday night and claimed its biggest victory of the season with a 1-0 win over NCAA Division I Saint Louis.
Both teams had a scoring opportunity early in the game, and Lindenwood taking advantage of their chance proved to be the difference. The first scoring threat came from the Billikens' Natalie Gamez who hit the post just over a minute into the game. The Lady Lions' scoring chance came approximately six minutes later when
Irene Taranhike brought the ball down the right side and fired a perfect pass to
Haley McCulloch. McCulloch's shot found the back of the goal to give Lindenwood a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the half was evenly played as the Billikens had just one more shot in the half than the Lady Lions. In the second-half, Saint Louis dominated play with possession on Lindenwood's side of the field for the majority of the half. Lindenwood's defense wouldn't break though as it faced seven shots and did not allow any past goalie
Caitlin Erickson. Erickson made eight saves, including five in the final half, for her second shutout of the season. Three of the saves came in the final two minutes, with a pair coming on back-to-back shots and the final one coming as the buzzer sounded to end the game.
Lindenwood will look to move to .500 on the season this Saturday when it hosts Bellarmine at 2 p.m. in Hunter Stadium.
