Field Hockey Loses Heartbreaker in Overtime

The Lindenwood field hockey team dropped an overtime decision to Centre College (Ky.), 5-4, this morning.

The Lions held a 3-2 advantage at the break, but the Colonels scored the final three goals of the contest, including the deciding goal from Barbara Parks to hand the Lions their second straight defeat.

Centre College struck first on a goal from Mary Kate Clodius, just eight minutes into the game. The scored remained 1-0 until LU's Irene Taranhike scored on an unassisted goal to even the score at the 15 minute mark. Less than two minutes later, Taranhike connected again on an assist from Jessica Ballard. Moments later Taranhike set up Lauren Cato for her first goal of the season and the Lions lead 3-1.

Centre's Sarah Humphries scored the first of her two goals on the day to cut the deficit to one with seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Lindenwood found the net quickly to start the second half as Haley McCulloch recorded an unassisted goal to push the Lions' lead back to two. Minutes later, Humphries struck again, cutting Lindenwood's lead down to one. Both of Humphries' goals were unassisted.

The Colonels evened the score at four apiece at the 23 minute mark on a Sarah Faulkner score. Humphries was credited with the assist. The two teams played a defensive stalemate over the next twenty minutes, eventually sending the game into overtime.

Lindenwood failed to convert on two separate occasions in the extra period before Parks fired home the game winner.

The Lions had just seven shots on goal compared to 15 for the Colonels. A deciding factor in the outcome of the game was the amount of corner kicks Centre attempted. The Lions attempted just one compared to 19 for the Colonels.

Caitlin Erickson recorded 10 saves in goalie for Lindenwood. Taranhike finished with two goals and an assist to lead the Lions.

Lindenwood falls to 0-2 on the season and will look to bounce back next Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan. The game will start at 12:00 p.m.
